Abstract:
Every day Rijkswaterstaat looks after the national road network in the Netherlands to ensure that three million road users can drive safely and efficiently. Traffic management is becoming increasingly important. It enables a better use of existing roads by managing the supply and demand of traffic. Traffic control rooms monitor and guide the traffic, for example by opening extra lanes during rush-hour and advising on detours in case of traffic jams, incidents and road works. The Rijkswaterstaat road inspectors handle incidents and facilitate a better flow of traffic jams. Road Users can choose their optimal route based on real-time information such as travel times on panels above the road. Rijkswaterstaat can also influence traffic flow by adjusting speed limits on these panels when traffic jams develop. The project Dynamic Speed Limits has been set up to gain more insight into the impact of variable, tailor-made speed limits.
